GPS Training Concepts
What's Important?
Most users find it difficult to learn a GPS system from manuals or
CD ROM -based instructions. There is so much material one
doesn't know where to begin or determine what information is
important and what information is superfluous. The key to our
training is to build an information structure that highlights the
critical steps in field preparation, data collection, and data
processing. The student can then later build on the provided
training structure to enhance their GPS knowledge.
Success after Class
One of our training objectives is to conduct enough hands-on
field and office work so the student feels comfortable
pushing buttons on the datalogger or office computer. The
ultimate objective is insure that the day after the course is
completed the student can successfully do all the field and office
GPS operations on their own.
The Learning Curve
The courses push a learning curve from a low level of
comprehensive to a high level of understanding and
ability. Unfortunately, the learning curve can turn into a
de-learning curve if the student fails to operate the GPS system
after the course is over. It is therefore important for
students to take their GPS system into the field as soon as
possible and frequently so their skill is maintained.
Questions are Encouraged
There is an old training saying, "The only bad question is
the one that's not asked." We encourage questions
because in a technical training environment if a student
has a question but doesn't ask it, their learning could be blocked
by preoccupation with a information "black
hole."
